Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix - PC Port

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for Xbox Live Arcade, running natively on Windows, and experimentally on Linux and Steam Deck, through static recompilation, with online play, the TRG launcher and modern PC options

Latest release Downloads Platforms

The original Xbox 360 game code, statically recompiled to native PC code with the ReXGlue SDK. No game files included: bring your own Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix Xbox Live Arcade package. The official Xbox 360 Title Update #1 is optional and plays the updated game version 0.0.2.3.

Features

  • Online play: Online Match with friends over the internet, with rollback netplay, direct UDP connections and an automatic relay fallback. Friend codes and friend requests, presence, an optional public Lobby to find other players, Find Match, Create Match, Invite Player, a Connection test and a Ping display. See Online play.
  • Native static recompilation: the game's own code, not an emulator. Windows, plus an experimental Linux AppImage.
  • TRG launcher with a game package installer, an optional Title Update installer, an Online page (Settings, Friends and Lobby), display and graphics options, an Achievements page and a Bug Report page.
  • Base game or Title Update: both game versions (0.0.1.3 and 0.0.2.3) are built into the program with the same features, and the Title Update can be added or removed at any time.
  • Launcher updates: the launcher checks GitHub releases once per start and installs a newer release only when you choose UPDATE NOW. Game files, saves, settings and logs are kept.
  • Display: Windowed or Borderless Fullscreen (F11), window size, monitor and VSync. Per-monitor high-DPI support, and the game window opens where and how large you chose.
  • Presentation: Letterbox keeps the picture's proportions, Stretch fills the window. Aspect ratios 16:9, 16:10, 21:9, 32:9, 4:3 and 5:4.
  • Fight Area: Original keeps the fight's original framing, Fill 16:9 removes the black bars at the sides of the fight, Character Select, VS and the winner screen.
  • Render resolution and Internal render resolution: Render resolution (1x to 4x) sets the target resolution of the picture. Internal render resolution (100% Native, 75% Performance, 50% Low-end) lowers the resolution the GPU draws at before the picture is scaled up, trading sharpness for performance. Both are separate from the Window size.
  • Graphics card selection: choose which compatible GPU renders the game.
  • Anti-aliasing, multisampling and texture filtering choices.
  • Language: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish or Português Brasil. Português Brasil is a localization added by this port; the original game has no Portuguese option (see docs/localization-pt-br.md).
  • Local saves: the game saves and loads as on the console.
  • Offline achievements: the game's 12 achievements (200G) are kept on this PC, listed with F7, in the game's own Achievements menu item and in the launcher. There is no Xbox Live connection, and Ranked Match is not offered, so the four achievements that need online ranked matches cannot be earned.
  • Xbox controller support with no setup, and keyboard play as an Xbox 360 controller.
  • In-game frame counter (F2), online Ping display (F3), and optional frame rate or render resolution in the window title.
  • CPU opponent in Local Match: in the Local Match lobby, X adds a CPU opponent to the empty side and cycles its difficulty from 1 to 8, Y removes it.
  • Enable Akuma (optional, off by default): Akuma is selectable on Character Select without the secret input.
  • Evil Ryu and Violent Ken (optional, off by default): two extra fighters with their own Character Select cells, moves, palettes, presentation and online compatibility. Turn them on in the launcher's Gameplay page; see docs/ultra-fighters.md.
  • Akuma bug fixes (optional, off by default, experimental): corrects HD Remix Akuma bugs documented by designer David Sirlin. See Akuma bug fixes.
  • Bug Report: send a problem report with one of the newest logs from the launcher. The log is shown first with names, folders, network addresses and online identifiers removed; My reports shows each report's status and replies from the developer.
  • Portable user data: saves, settings and achievements are in a user_data folder beside the program.

The game runs at its original speed of 60 updates per second.

What you need

Supported builds: Base013 (default.xex 0.0.1.3, CRC32 B734F075) and TU023 (Base013 plus the official Title Update #1, default.xexp CRC32 38DE2310, game version 0.0.2.3). Both are supported and play online against the same build only.

  • Windows: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, and a DirectX 12 graphics card, with the latest Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64). Most PCs have it.
  • Linux / Steam Deck (experimental): 64-bit x86 with glibc 2.31 or newer and a Vulkan driver. Steam Deck support is experimental and has not yet been validated on hardware. See docs/linux.md.
  • Your own Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix Xbox Live Arcade package (required), and optionally the official Title Update #1 package. The game package alone plays game version 0.0.1.3. Installing the Title Update enables the updated version 0.0.2.3; removing it returns to 0.0.1.3. The same program runs both, because the code of both versions is built into it, and installing or removing the Title Update never needs a new download or build.

The launcher tells the two packages apart by their content type, checks the Title ID, and checks default.xex and default.xexp after extracting them. Any other version is refused with the version that was found, because the port supports exactly these two versions of the game code.

Installing

  1. Download SSF2THDRemix-v0.4.0-windows-x64.zip from the latest release and extract it anywhere you can write to.
  2. Run ssf2t_hd_remix.exe. The launcher opens.
  3. On the Play page click Install Game and pick your game package. It is one file with a long hexadecimal name and no extension. On an Xbox 360 drive it is in Content\0000000000000000\584108A4\000D0000\.
  4. Optional: click Install Title Update and pick the Title Update #1 package (Content\0000000000000000\584108A4\000B0000\ on an Xbox 360 drive). The two packages are installed separately and either can go first. Installing one does not install the other, and each button refuses the other kind of package.
  5. Wait until Ready to play appears. The game files (about 370 MB) are copied into the game folder next to the program; from the Title Update the launcher takes only default.xexp.
  6. Press PLAY. It is enabled as soon as the game package is installed (game version 0.0.1.3), or 0.0.2.3 when the Title Update is installed too.

No game files and no Title Update files are included in the release. Reinstall Game repairs the game files and keeps your settings, saves and an installed Title Update. Remove Title Update deletes only default.xexp from the game folder and returns to game version 0.0.1.3; the game files, saves, settings and achievements are not touched, and the game is still ready to play. An unsupported default.xexp blocks Play until it is removed or replaced.

Linux AppImage (experimental)

Download SSF2THDRemix-v0.4.0-x86_64.AppImage, make it executable (chmod +x) and run it from a folder you can write to. The launcher works as on Windows; game, logs and user_data are created next to the AppImage file. It has not yet been validated on real Linux or Steam Deck hardware. Details, requirements and the FUSE fallback are in docs/linux.md.

Windows SmartScreen

Windows may warn the first time you run the program, because the release is not digitally signed. Choose More info, then Run anyway.

The launcher

Your choices are saved to settings.toml in the user_data folder next to the program. To turn the launcher off, set Show this launcher to Off on the Play page. Hold Shift while starting to bring it back.

  • Play: status, Install Game or Reinstall Game, Install Title Update or Remove Title Update
  • Online: Online play, then three tabs: Settings (Online name, Friend code, Connection test, Ping display, secret characters), Friends (friend requests and friends) and Lobby (Show me in Lobby and the players who chose to be listed)
  • Display: Display mode, Window size, Monitor, Aspect Ratio, VSync, Presentation (Letterbox or Stretch) and Fight Area (Original or Fill 16:9)
  • Graphics: Graphics card, Render resolution, Internal render resolution, Anti-aliasing, Multisampling, Texture filtering
  • Gameplay: Language, Skip intro (starts directly at the title screen, Press Start), frame rate and render resolution in the title, frame counter, Enable Akuma, Akuma bug fixes, Enable Evil Ryu and Violent Ken, Infinite Time and the Local Match player names
  • Achievements: unlocked achievements and gamerscore
  • Controls: keyboard on or off, every key remappable, and Keyboard defaults to restore the standard layout
  • Bug Report: describe a problem, preview the scrubbed log, send it, and follow My reports
  • About: GitHub Sponsors link, versions, folders (game, saves and settings, logs), Show settings file, Detailed logging, Open logs folder and Reset all settings

During gameplay the mouse cursor follows the last input device: mouse activity shows it, keyboard or controller activity hides it, and mouse-driven overlays always show it.

Akuma bug fixes

Akuma bug fixes is an optional Gameplay setting, Off by default. It is separate from Enable Akuma: Enable Akuma makes him selectable, this setting decides how he plays. It changes HD Remix Akuma only, including a CPU-controlled one. Classic mode stays original, and so do online matches and the developer Netplay Test, because the two players' games must run the same way and the option is not negotiated between them.

Designer David Sirlin documented four unintended bugs in HD Remix Akuma (Akuma, August 18, 2014, under "Bugs That Ruined Akuma"). This option follows Issue #13. It is experimental: nothing here has been validated by experienced HD Remix players yet.

Sirlin's bugStatusWhat the option does
Raging Demon: about 25% chance to jump out after air-fireball blockstunCorrected, needs community validationWhile the opponent holds up in the tick between blockstun and pre-jump, the dash waits, so the jump always starts.
Red fireball: invulnerable, unthrowable startupCorrected, needs community validationThe first two startup frames get the standing hurt boxes the rest of the startup already uses. Timing and recovery are unchanged.
Dragon Punch: zero-frame startupCorrected, needs community validationThe extra hit on the move's first frames is removed. The article gives no target value: the first hit now comes from the attack data Ryu's Dragon Punch starts with, on the same pose, about 4 frames in (5 for fierce). Total length is unchanged.
Air fireball: oversized hit box behind the projectileNot corrected yetThe box is identified, but neither the article nor the game data gives the intended size, and it is shared with Classic.

Please compare Off and On in Training and report differences on Issue #13:

  • Raging Demon: block an air fireball, land, and start Raging Demon during the blockstun while the opponent holds up. With the option On the jump should always come out. Without holding up, or after a move the opponent is committed to, Demon should still catch as before.
  • Red fireball: hit or throw Akuma on the first frames of his red fireball. With the option On this should work. Speed, projectile and recovery should match Off.
  • Dragon Punch: try safe jumps against each strength. With the option On, Akuma should no longer hit on the first frame. Invulnerability, height and recovery should match Off.
  • Air fireball (unchanged, for reference): Honda's torpedo passing under the back of the fireball is the case the article names. Reports of where the collision feels wrong help finish this fix.

Online play

Online Match plays one friend at a time. The online service handles sign-in, friends, presence, finding a match, signalling and the relay fallback. The fight itself runs directly between the two PCs over UDP whenever possible, so you never type an IP address. Full details are in docs/online.md.

  1. Launcher, Online page: set Online play to On and choose an Online name.
  2. Run the Connection test. With Online play on, PLAY waits until one test has finished, whatever its result (Ready, Limited or Failed).
  3. Share your Friend code, paste a friend's code and Send request; they Accept.
  4. Both press PLAY, then choose Multiplayer > Online Match in the game.
  5. One player picks Create Match (and may use Invite Player), the other picks Find Match or accepts the invite.

The Lobby tab lists the players who turned on Show me in Lobby (Off by default), with their Online name, status, platform and whether their version is compatible, so you can send them a friend request. Nothing else about you is shown, and matches are still played between friends.

Friends and compatible versions are what matches are found through: you and your friend must run the same game build (Base013 with Base013, TU023 with TU023). Online play is off by default, and with it off the program never connects to the service. F3 shows the Ping display; Infinite Time is disabled while Online play is on.

Direct UDP is always tried first (STUN and UDP hole punching). If it cannot be established, the match uses the relay automatically. Direct play between two PCs on different internet connections has been tested; the relay fallback is implemented and tested by script, and was not yet tried between real players. If your network behaves unusually, run the Connection test and send the log.

Reporting problems

The launcher's Bug Report page sends a report with a log you choose; the log is previewed with personal details removed before anything is sent, and My reports shows the ticket, its status and any reply. You can also open an issue. If the game does not start or crashes, please open an issue. Attach the newest ssf2t_hd_remix_*.log file from the logs folder next to the program, and say what you were doing when the problem happened. The launcher and the game write to the same log for one application session. For an online problem, also say whether you were using Direct or Relay (the log lists transport selected=), and run the Connection test first. After a crash on Windows the log ends with a CRASH REPORT section; no separate crash file or minidump is written. For a non-crash problem, turn Detailed logging on in the launcher's About page, reproduce it, and send the newest log.

Building it yourself

The recompiled C++ is generated from your own game files, so the repository does not contain it. The TRG launcher is included in third_party\trg-launcher.

  1. Install Visual Studio with the C++ and LLVM/Clang components.
  2. Extract your game package into game\extracted with tools\extract_stfs.ps1, so that game\extracted\default.xex exists. Optionally extract the Title Update package the same way (default.xexp) to build the updated version too.
  3. .\tools\codegen.ps1 downloads the pinned ReXGlue SDK 0.10.0 and generates the C++ of generated\base from default.xex (0.0.1.3) and, when default.xexp is present, of generated\tu from default.xex with default.xexp (0.0.2.3). Their symbols are prefixed base013_ and tu023_ so both link into one program. Without default.xexp the build holds the base game alone, which is a complete build. An image that is already current is skipped. python -I tools\xex_image.py writes the updated image to game\analysis\default.image.bin for the function scanner and the image tests.
  4. .\tools\build.ps1 builds build\ssf2t_hd_remix.exe; it runs codegen.ps1 first, so a build never needs default.xexp. It also checks that ReXGlue's runtime and Xenos GPU plugin in tools\rexglue were built from this project's patches (patches\rexglue-sdk) and rebuilds them from the v0.10.0 source when they were not.
  5. .\tools\test.ps1 runs the headless tests for Windows and, inside WSL (Ubuntu 20.04), for Linux; it is the only command needed for parity.
  6. .\tools\package-release.ps1 (PowerShell 7, and MSYS2 CLANG64 for the update helper) makes the release ZIP in dist\. It refuses to package a runtime that does not match the patches and publishes nothing. See docs/release.md.
